Hygiene and infection control are of paramount importance in every dental, medical, and biological lab-based setting. Dental instruments, for example, must be thoroughly cleaned to eliminate all microorganisms, and many of these, including bacteria and viruses, are resilient and can be resistant to normal standard cleaning methods.

Until the late 1980s, when the autoclave was introduced, open flame exposure was used to sterilize instruments; this was an unreliable, not to mention somewhat unsafe, practice.

What is an Autoclave?

Resembling a pressure cooker, an autoclave is used to expose microorganisms to a harsh enough environment to kill them. It uses dry, superheated steam in a vacuum environment to kill detergent-resistant and chemical-resistant microorganisms, and can decontaminate everything from hollow instruments to other solids and even some liquids.

The autoclave heats the items placed in it to high temperatures of around 120°C. For a dental clinic, autoclaves are benchtop instruments of a similar size to a microwave oven. Several instruments and other small items can be sterilized in a single cycle.

A dense cloud of dry steam is directed and circulated in the compartment and the contaminated air is then ducted out as exhaust and replaced by saturated steam.

A typical session for dental sterilizing can take as little as six minutes, during which the microorganisms are destroyed. There is no requirement for drying, and modern autoclaves incorporate a cooling phase in the cycle.

Important:

  • Always use gloves when autoclaving
  • Use only an approved autoclave for your purposes
  • Not all materials can be autoclaved

Autoclaving Benefits

  • Eliminate bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms quickly and effectively
  • 100% safe
  • Autoclaving will not damage autoclavable instruments
  • Sterilize several instruments at once
  • Operate in the background while you go about your work
  • No manual labour required
  • Quick turnover
  • Maintain stringent infection control standards
  • Protect your patients and your staff
