We all understand the importance of brushing our teeth and flossing daily to maintain our teeth’s health and longevity. But how often do you think about your gums?

Gums may not be top-of-mind for most of us, but they are critical to the health and wellbeing of not only your teeth and mouth but your entire body.

According to the Australian Department of Health, more than 20% of Australians have moderate gum disease – and many more experience milder forms of this health problem.

What are the Gums?

The gums or gingiva are the soft tissues that surround and protect the teeth and the underlying bone that supports them. Attached to the teeth, the gums form a protective seal and barrier against bacteria and infection and the development of oral disease.

The mouth is a treasure trove of bacteria; some of these bacteria are good, while others are bad. Gum health maintains the balance of healthy bacteria.

Gum Disease

Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease. It is inflammation of the gum tissues. It’s caused by the buildup up of plaque and tartar which provide the perfect habitat for oral bacteria to develop and take hold. This leads to the production of toxins, irritation and the resultant inflammation triggers an immune response and which destroys gum tissue.

Untreated gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. This is a much more serious gum disease whereby inflammation around the teeth damages the gums and bones that support the teeth. Bone structure is gradually lost along with the teeth.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Red, tender, or swollen gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Persistent, ongoing bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Widening spaces between teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Abscessed gums or teeth
  • Ill-fitting dentures/bridges

If gum disease is not treated, it can have major health implications for the entire body as harmful bacteria from the mouth enters the bloodstream and travels systemically.

Medical research has demonstrated direct links between gum disease and:

  • heart disease
  • vascular disease
  • diabetes
  • pneumonia
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • acute bronchitis
  • dementia
  • fertility issues
  • pregnancy complications

Maintaining Gum Health

Good oral hygiene is essential to keeping the seal of the gums around the teeth intact and preventing plaque buildup. Gum care is necessary to prevent food particles and bacteria from damaging the teeth.

  • Twice-daily brushing and flossing
  • Antibacterial mouthwashes
  • Keep dentures or other oral appliances clean and sanitized between uses
  • Avoid or stop smoking (tobacco inhibits healing)
  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Drink plenty of fresh clean water
  • Avoid sugary drinks and snacks
  • Chew sugar-free gum
  • Maintain your preventative dental checkup schedule
